What is Special Education

Prior to his presidency, many people that would now be considered to have even a mild state of disability, were sometimes shipped off to residencies that did not give them the opportunities that our children have today. Many students with untreated disabilities led lifeless lives cooped up in segregated areas where they were treated very inhumanely and suffered intolerably.

Present day Special Education Special Education refers to a collection of services that schools put into effect after diagnostic evaluations or when parents or teachers raise concerns. These supports aren’t reserved only for learners with identified disabilities; students who demonstrate unusually high abilities can also receive Special Education services. Often, those high-ability students are described as "gifted".

Special Education provides a framework that parents, teachers, and students use to ensure every child has an individualized educational plan. Everyone involved helps set the specific learning goals for a child receiving special education. This structure aims to give targeted help in academic and social areas to those who need it most, drawing on both the regular classroom teacher and the special education staff. Educators, family members, and specialists will come together to develop an IEP (Individualized Education Plan) for the child.

The IEP spells out the exact knowledge, skills, and behaviors the team will focus on to improve the child’s chances for success. These plans are checked and updated as needed during the year, and the team must hold a meeting at least once every twelve months. Students with IEPs may stay in public school programs until they turn 21. By that milestone, the goal is that they have gained enough independence to live on their own or in a supported group residence, although outcomes can vary.
