What are the signs of a depressed child?
People have different ways of coping. Depression can come at various levels. Some children would have an easier time dealing with challenges while some would take a much longer time. If not given any help children with depression can rebel or worse can take their own life.
Today’s problems will include bullying, but not only in the physical form but also in social networking. Children of today are facing more and more problems compared with the children of the past and they have the tendency to feel that they are losing control over their lives.
Children can suffer from depression when parents go through a divorce, financial problems, sibling rivalry and even challenges and problems in school. Children can also feel unsecured in their own classroom and this can all build up. These feelings will then form into one big depression and this can destroy their learning ability.
Even children with special needs undergo much trauma and depression due to the circumstances around them. Special children put in regular classroom settings have difficulties when it comes to learning. They at times would not feel that they are able to cope with their surroundings which can cause them to question themselves especially when they are not getting along with friends.
When this happens, parents, educators and the school have the responsibility to help the child deal with their depression before it escalates into a much bigger problem.
Parents and teachers have to find a way to communicate to the child and provide an effective and reliable support system for the child. Teachers and parents would also have to learn to teach the children the positive traits of the child and to learn to help them feel better.
It is the responsibility of the teachers to speak with the parents in order to get hold of the issues at home and to tell them about the changes the teachers have noticed. This must be done carefully in such a way that the child will not be criticized. The teachers have to do this in a non-confrontational manner.
